To accommodate cherry harvesting and a seasonal increase in traffic, the county Road Commission will reopen County Road 633 between Lakeview Hills and Bingham roads beginning at noon on Friday, June 29.
The road has been closed while the L.W. Lamb Company has been working to remove and replace the former railroad trestle bridge over 633 and replace it with a wooden structure. Commission engineer James C. Johnson said the company completed demolition at the site two weeks ago, but has had problems getting parts from suppliers for the new bridge.
Work will continue on the reconstruction of the bridge carrying the Leelanau Trail over 633. A construction speed zone of 25 miles per hour will be posted and enforced in the construction area.
“Motorists should expect to slow down through this compact work zone and watch carefully for workers along the roadway as they assemble the new bridge,” Johnson said. There will be occasional traffic stops through flagging to allow for maneuvering of construction equipment.
The $212,000 project is being funded by a federal transportation safety grant administered through the Michigan Department of Transportation. A $28,000 local match will be provided by TART Trails, Inc. The existing Leelanau Trail detour on Bingham Road to County Road 641 will remain in place until the project is complete.
“Our contractor is not obligated to open traffic until he completes his work. He feels strongly that the cherry harvest is important and that he should make accommodations in this work to get the traffic flowing,” Johnson said.
Work is scheduled to be completed by July 13 and the work zone will continue during that time. Johnson said the completion date depends on weather conditions.
