Philip Brown, the son of Jere and Gail Brown of Elmwood Township, was recently promoted to sergeant in the Army at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he has been serving as a weapons instructor since January 2006 following a one-year tour of duty in Iraq as a sniper team observer with an infantry rifle platoon. He was slated to complete his enlistment this month before returning home and attending Illinois State University in the fall.
