Annual Tour de TART bike ride set for July 27

Hundreds of bicyclists are expected to participate in a one-way bike ride from Traverse City to Suttons Bay, mostly on the Leelanau Trail, on July 27.

Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails, Inc., is registering participants for its seventh annual "Tour de TART."

The event is a 19-mile ride capped by a bayside meal at the Suttons Bay Marina. The event will begin between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, July 27, at McLain Cycle at 750 E. Eighth Street in Traverse City. Snacks and rest stops will be offered along the route to Suttons Bay. Following a meal in Suttons Bay, bus service back to Traverse City will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the last bus departing at 10 p.m. A truck will be used to transport bikes back to Traverse City.

For Suttons Bay area participants, a bus and a truck will leave the Suttons Bay Marina promptly at 4 p.m. and drop riders at McLain Cycle in Traverse City for the start of the event.

Registration for the event is $25 per person before July 10; $30 per person between July 10 and July 23; and $40 per person between July 24 and July 27. Proceeds will benefit local trails operated by TART Trails, Inc., a non-profit organization.

The TART Trails are a network of four trails throughout the region. One of the four, the Leelanau Trail, is a 15 mile-long former railroad corridor running from Traverse City to Suttons Bay. Seven miles of the Leelanau Trail are paved. Funds are being raised to pave the remainder.

For more information, and to register, phone the TART office at 941-4300 or visit traversetrails.org/tourdetart online.
