A preliminary proposal to eliminate whitetail deer from North Manitou Island is drawing criticism from public and private officials who represent hunters.
A National Park Service request to close 30 miles of county roads within Sleeping Bear Dunes is also drawing criticism. NPS officials last week outlined a “preferred alternative” for a new Lakeshore General Management Plan, and one objective is to reduce motorized access on South Manitou Island.

Those who had been complaining about the lack of “summer” weather have finally gotten what they’ve been waiting for in the form of a warm spell that county residents and visitors are enjoying.

Denial of a requested rezoning for the Petty property in Leelanau Township was the unanimous recommendation of the count planning commission at its monthly meeting Monday night.

After more than five years of indecision, the state Department of Environmental Quality has given Michigan counties the go-ahead to begin updating their solid waste management plans.

County officials said this week they’re still awaiting a purchase offer for the County Building grounds in Leland that was announced at a township meeting in Leland last Monday.

Although nearly an inch of rain fell in a small area south of Suttons Bay in a brief storm last week, most of Leelanau County continued to be plagued by subnormal precipitation that has cut the size of cherries and field crops and caused problems for boaters in many areas.

A traditional parade at Leland and a fireworks display at Glen Arbor will be features of Fourth of July celebrations this year in Leelanau County.
* * *
The resurfacing of M-22 on the west side of Leelanau County from its junction with M-204 south of Leland to Glen Arbor is on the construction schedule for 1978, County Road Commission engineer James Gilbo said yesterday.

JUNE 26,1952

Four Leelanau County girls will be among the 17 regional candidates competing tonight in Traverse City for the title of National Cherry Queen. They are Joyce Wright, Miss Greilickville; Patricia Miller, Miss Suttons Bay; Ruther Belanger, Miss Lake Leelanau; and Carol Hubele, Miss Northport.

Northport Chamber of Commerce president J.R. Bourdo and his committee have nearly completed plans for the old fashioned county-wide July 4 celebration and homecoming there July 4 and 5.

110 YEARS AGO

JUNE 24, 1897

G.M. Dame, a Northport businessman, made us a pleasant call, and while here, Mr. Dame caught two fine pickerel in the river just back of our office.

Fred McFall of Cedar did business at the court house on Friday. Fred informs us that business is good in his town.

Harry Hinshaw caught seven large Mackinaw trout in Carp lake yesterday afternoon in two hours time.
* * *
The steam barge Chipman took a full load of wood yesterday at Gill’s Pier, for C.A. Nelson.
