A group of 154 runners ranging in age from 7 to 91 competed in the annual Run for Funds in Northport the morning of Saturday, June 30.

The 28th annual race was part of the Northport Harbor Days celebration and a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, and featured 2 mile, 5K and 10K races. A 2-mile walk was also held.

“We had 63 racers pre-registered, which was the most ever,” said race director George Anderson. “It’s become a real family affair.”

Eleven members of the Bensley family participated, ranging from 9-year-old Josh Roman to 45-year-old Bob Bensley, who ran in the race for the 26th straight year.

The oldest competitor in the race was Mac Thomas, 91, of Northport. He was clocked in 1 hour, 55 minutes in the 10K race, the same time that Robert Maynard, 87, of Suttons Bay recorded.

In the 2-mile run, Ben Miller, 16, of Grosse Pointe Park was the male winner in 10:29. Lauren Bensley, 13, of Northport was first female racer across the line in the in 14:22.

In the 5K race, Kevin Deyo, 48, of Traverse City (19:02) and Julie Alpers, 29, of Suttons Bay (23:06) were the men’s and women’s winners. Alpers won while racing in bare feet.

In the 10K race, Chris Sutter, 26, of Detroit (35:22) and Karen Kirt, 39, of Lake Leelanau (43:12) were the top male and female finishers.
