A 20-year-old Cedar man faces several charges after a high-speed chase Saturday morning that ended in a traffic accident.
The man, whose name is being withheld pending arraignment, was driving southbound on M-22 in Glen Arbor when Sgt. Jerry Roush attempted to make a traffic stop for exceeding the speed limit.
According to police reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle near Day Forest Road and struck a group of trees. He was uninjured, but charged with fleeing and eluding a police officer, possession of marijuana, and minor in possession of alcohol. He posted bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in District Court.
Elsewhere in the county, a 17-year-old Mount Pleasant man was jailed July 4 after an incident in the Northport marina parking lot. Officers heard the man yelling obscenities at a group of youths and threatening them with physical violence. Upon talking with the youth and his father, officers learned that the subject had consumed a fifth of vodka earlier in the day.
The subject was arrested as a disorderly person and is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
In total, 17 appearance tickets were issued to minors in possession of alcohol during the Fourth of July and following weekend. Five were issued at fireworks — four in Leland, one in Northport. In addition, 14 traffic citations were issued along with eight marine violations.
Sheriff Michael F. Oltersdorf himself issued an appearance ticket for possession of illegal fireworks to an observer at the Northport fireworks.
The department has also received complaints about pedestrians walking on the traveled portion of the roadways, and failing to move off the pavement when vehicles approached.
“They do not seem to fear a 4,000-pound automobile coming directly at them or even from behind,” the sheriff said.
