Board to hold special meeting

A special meeting of the Glen Lake Board of Education will be held Sept. 24 to gain public input on the acceptance of students now that the district has gone out-of-formula.

The board will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the high school media center to begin a public input process.

“We really have never discussed how (out-of-formula) students will be accepted given our move to out-of-district,” Superintendent Joan Groening said. “We’d like a robust discussion and hope to consider how best to communicate with the community.”

Issues to be discussed include class size and physical space available within the K-12 complex.

Since the adoption of Proposal A, most school districts have relied on a state per-pupil foundation allowance, generated from a statewide 6-mill property tax levy for education. The foundation allowance, multiplied by the number of students, represents the lion’s share of revenue to most school districts, which are referred to as “in formula.”

However, when the product of a district’s taxable property value and the non-homestead tax levied is greater than what the district would receive “in formula,” they are designated as “out of formula.” Glen Lake became “out of formula” last year.

In addition, the board would like to gain input on how best to add “curb appeal” to the exterior of its building. It’s been suggested that the school collaborate with the Master Gardener program or other local gardening groups to enhance the exterior of the building.
