A 3 percent salary increase, prescribed by the wage and salary study adopted last year, was given to county union workers on July 1st.

The largest farmland preservation deal in county history is being struck between the owners of the Stanek family farm, the State of Michigan, and the Leelanau Conservancy. The 600-plus-acre fruit farm is located along Co. Rd. 633 near Crain Hill Rd.

With tart and sweet cherry crops expected to be the smallest in decades, businesses that depend on cherry growers are joining farmers in feeling the pinch.

Leelanau county sheriff’s officers will receive pay raises averaging more than $900 a year during the next three years under a new contract with the county.

JULY 10, 1952

Twelve head of cattle and a team of horses perished Saturday night in a fire which destroyed the barn on the William Dufek farm three miles south of Leland.

Local cherry growers, already faced with a short crop this year, are threatened with a loss if the price of 51⁄2 cents a pound established this week in Benton Harbor prevails in the Grand Traverse Region.

Seven Leelanau County men left Wednesday morning for pre-induction physical examinations in Detroit and orders have been mailed by the selective serve board to nine other men to report July 24 for induction.

JULY 8, 1897

Suttons Bay. Frank Kirt purchases new bicycle of A.A. Sessions. Louis Bolme kept store for F.F. Smiseth during his absense. Marcus Hansen slung soda water and paregoric last Monday for Goldschmitt who celebrated in Elk Rapids.

Mr. Kasson Freeman of Burdickville was in our village this week on business. Mr. Freeman informed us his people are making grand preparations for the people’s picnic.
* * *
Maple City. Nearly everybody celebrated at Cedar. Several Maple citizens went to Empire and viewed the street parade.
