Two T-C men arraigned on drug charges

Two Traverse City men could spend up to four years in prison following their arrests on drug-related charges.

Gary L. Speir, 24, and Zachary N. Mahrle, 20, both of 906 Rose Court, were arraigned in 86th District Court Friday on charges of delivery or manufacture of marijuana and possession of a Schedule 5 narcotic, psilocyn. Mahrle is also facing charges of tampering with evidence.

Spier is lodged in the county jail after failing to post a $100,000 cash bond. Mahrle is free after posting 10 percent of a $2,000 bond.

According to court documents, on Tuesday, July 10, officers from the Grand Traverse Band Police Department responded to a call from a business that reported two males were smoking from a pipe inside a black, four-door Saturn car. The officers met with the two suspects and identified them as Mahrle and another man who only gave his name as “Christopher.” Mahrle told officers they had obtained the marijuana from a laptop computer bag allegedly owned by Speir, and he had gotten permission from Speir to remove the bag from another vehicle, the report states. The officers searched the interior of the Saturn and found the black laptop bag as well as a computer; two bags containing a green, leafy substance with an odor of marijuana; two cellophane packages containing what appeared to be five dried mushrooms each; and 20 unused plastic baggies, according to the report. Officers seized $291 in cash from Mahrle and $461 from Speir, the documents states.

During the investigation, one of the police officers learned of an outstanding warrant for Speir’s arrest in Yavapai County, Ariz. He is wanted for two counts of felony sexual exploitation of a minor, one count of identity theft, and one count of computer tampering, the report states.

On Thursday, July 12, Mahrle returned to the GTB Police Department to retrieve personal belongings from the Saturn and was accompanied by a police officer. The officer allegedly saw the defendant remove and attempt to conceal an item from the vehicle, an allegation that Mahrle denied. The officer noticed a grey colored case in the backseat, tucked between seat cushions. The officer opened the case and discovered a digital scale as well as a substance believed to be marijuana, the report states.

If found guilty on the delivery/manufacture charge, a felony, both men face a maximum penalty of up to four years in prison and or up to $20,000 in fines and costs. If found guilty on the possession of psilocyn charge, a misdemeanor, the maximum penalty is up to one year in the county jail and or up to $2,000 in fine and costs. Mahrle faces a maximum penalty for the tampering charge, a felony, of up to four years in prison and or up to $5,000 in fine and costs.
