News from the Omena area July 19, 2007

I would like say thanks to all the readers of this column who showed concern about my boating accident. I am glad to report there were no injuries other than to my navigational pride.

The Omena Village Preservation Association held its annual yard sale this past weekend and it was a huge success. Thanks to all who stopped by and a special thanks to all the donors and volunteers. Without your help these events would not happen. I would be remiss if I didn’t say a thank-you to Gunther for allowing us the use of his front yard for a day of controlled chaos.

On Sunday, July 29, the Omena Historical Society is hosting a “Trip Down Memory Lane” to be held at the museum in Omena. It will be followed by refreshments at the home of Jim and Kathy Miller. Speakers will present information about the history of Omena, its people and the buildings. Hope to see you there.

Saturday, Aug. 4 is the day of Northport’s Pig Roast and Community Picnic, to be held at Marina Park from 2-5 p.m. For the kids there will be games and family fun; they can even skip the pork and request a hot dog. Enjoy the day, everyone.

Few people know that a bookshop was once a focal point in Omena. Solle’s Bookshop, owned by William H. Solle, was renowned for having or finding hard-to-find books. His mail order business spanned the globe, and that was long before the Internet.

Had my first meal at Omena’s new restaurant, “Knot just a bar.” The whitefish was excellent.
