The Glen Arbor Fire Department has some new equipment this week, thanks to generous benefactors.
Glen Arbor's Fire and Rescue Association received an anonymous donation in the amount of $10,800 for the purchase of a new thermal imaging camera, Fire Chief John Dodson told the Township Board Tuesday night.
The device uses state-of-the-art technology to enable firefighters to “see” through smoke and darkness to help find and rescue victims. The thermal imager will also play a major role in reducing property damage.
“We can see through walls so we’re not as likely to have to knock them down to get to what’s behind them,” he said.
With camera in hand, firefighters can often locate hot spots inside walls and take steps to extinguish the source of the heat before it spreads.
Dodson brought the camera with him to Tuesday’s monthly board meeting.
In addition to the camera, Dodson reported that the department is the recipient of a large stainless steel grill, also donated by a township resident.
The grill is valued at $4,500.
“I want to assure you that no tax dollars were spent to purchase this,” Dodson joked. “It was donated. I’m sure we’ll put it to good use.”
Board members said they continue to be surprised by the generosity of the public. An anonymous donor handed over more than $350,000 in 2004 for the purchase of a new fire engine.
“It’s amazing how the citizens come through,” trustee Bill Thompson said.
A display and demonstration of the capability of the camera is set as part of the department’s annual open house on Saturday, July 28. The event will be held at the township Public Safety Building on State Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
