McFarlane to lead school board again

Andrew McFarlane was re-elected president of the Leland Board of Education during the School Board’s 2007-08 organizational meeting Monday night.

Also re-elected to leadership posts were Peggy Gauthier as vice president, Peggy Miller as secretary, and Maynard (Rink) Wheeler as treasurer.

Wheeler will serve on the board’s finance committee, a standing committee, along with trustee Alan Hartwick and McFarlane. The personnel committee will be made up of Miller, Gauthier and trustee Peter Sneed.

Gauthier was appointed as the board representative on the school improvement committee. Miller will represent the board on the Leland Educational Foundation, and Wheeler is the representative on the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District’s board.

In other business during the brief organizational meeting, which took place prior to the regular monthly meeting the board:

• Designated Wheeler and McFarlane to sign checks against the general fund, 2001 debt retirement account and the infrastructure improvement fund;

• Named Fifth Third Bank as the depository for the general fund savings account, the 2001 debt retirement account and the infrastructure improvement fund;

• Identified the Michigan Liquid Asset Fund (MILAF) as the depository for the general fund savings and checking account. the 2001 debt retirement account and the infrastructure improvement fund;

• Selected Huntington National Bank as the depository for the internal, food service, and athletics accounts;

• Identified Thrun Law Firm, P.C. as its legal counsel;

• Appointed Sandra L. Potts as the recording secretary for board meetings;

• Agreed to continue meeting the third Monday of the month, with the exception of February and June. The February meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19, due to the President’s Day weekend. The June meeting will be postponed one week to coincide with the annual budget hearing.
