Hope for unanimous support for a proposed land swap between The Homestead resort and the National Park Service has already faded. “We oppose any swap taking land gained through eminent domain and giving it to a developer,” said Arlin Wasserman, policy director with the Michigan Land Institute based in Beulah.

The abandoned Sugar Loaf Tavern, a victim of last winter’s heavy snow and more recent vandalism, will be burned to the ground as practice by three local fire departments.

Official “establishment” of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Leelanau and Benzie counties might be delayed by litigation over title to the former D.H Day State Park near Glen Haven.

JULY 24, 1952

The Leelanau County department of social welfare Monday night instructed Prosecuting Attorney Marion H. Yoder to draw up petitions asking that a county convalescent hospital be constructed, at a cost not to exceed $150,000 as an annex to the county infirmary at Maple City.

More than 200 cherry growers, meeting Friday night at Suttons Bay in protest over the low price, decided against letting themselves be organized by the CIO or Farmers’ Union and against letting the crop hang in the trees.

The Leland Country Club formally purchased Monday all assets of the Leland Golf Club.

The stage between Northport and Suttons Bay has been discontinued for the present, the mail is carried by boat line.

Suttons Bay news: Suttons Bay, work up a little base ball enthusiasm. Joseph Kovairk purchased 60 acres of land from Nels and Lars Bolme. Jack Litney is doing big business in haying and harvesting machinery.
