Two men died in Leelanau County waters over a 7-hour time span last week.
One drowned while scuba diving and the other had a heart attack, Sheriff Michael F. Oltersdorf said.
In the first case, deputies responded about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25 to a waterfront home on South Lake Leelanau. The seasonal home is located on South Sand Bar Drive.
Police reports indicate that Gayle Arnold, 51, of Dublin, Ohio collapsed Wednesday morning while playing basketball in knee-deep water with his 13-year-old son and nephew. Neighbors and family members brought Arnold to shore and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but were unsuccessful.
Medical examiner Matthew Houghton confirmed that Arnold died of a heart attack, Oltersdorf said.
Later on July 25, just before 6 p.m., the body of a 51-year-old Traverse City man was pulled from two to three feet of water just off shore from the Elmwood Township Park.
Edward Paulson, 51, of Traverse City was diving alone and is believed to have drowned after experiencing a mild heart attack and losing his mouth piece that provided oxygen, Oltersdorf said.
He was discovered by other divers in the area.
