Annual Port Oneida Fair is on tap Friday, Saturday

This weekend will mark the sixth annual celebration of the Port Oneida Fair, sponsored by Friends of the Sleeping Bear Dunes.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, the Port Oneida Rural Historical District in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be the site of several activities ranging from demonstrations of crafts and rural skills, to a team of oxen pulling an old-fashioned mowing machine.

The fair takes place at five historic farms and a one-room schoolhouse in the historic district, which is located off M-22 four miles north of Glen Arbor. Blacksmithing, broom-making, quilting and weaving will also be demonstrated.

Special to this year’s fair will be a Civil War Encampment, with “special guests” including Abraham Lincoln and his bodyguard, Corporal Fred Dechow, who grew up on the Dechow farm in Port Oneida.

Children’s activities will be also available, including a chance to play old-time and traditional games. Daily chores required of children 100 years ago can also be practiced by youngsters attending the fair.

A passenger trolley will take visitors to the sites and exhibits at the fair. For more information, see the Port Oneida Gazette, which is inserted in today’s Enterprise.
