That big fish you catch Saturday could end up making your mortgage payment — or maybe a few of them.

The second annual Northport Salmon Slam, a one-day, three-prize fishing tournament, will begin with lines in the water at 5:30 a.m. in Leland or Northport. The tournament will end at 4 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded for the biggest salmon caught — $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. The event is being sponsored by Northport-Omena Chamber of Commerce.

A tournament official will be checking boats and coolers from 5-7 a.m. at both launch sites. The tournament headquarters will be set in the Depot building next to the Northport Marina.

A pre-tournament meeting will be held at Haserot Park in Northport at 7 p.m. Friday that must be attended by at least one member of each crew entered.
