Salmon nets man $2,000 at tourney

A 18.85-pound catch earned Keith Odzeina the first-place prize of $2,000 at the second annual Northport Salmon Slam Saturday.

The event was sponsored by Northport-Omena Chamber of Commerce and had 23 crews entered that fished out of the Northport and Leland marinas.

Sally Cohoon, president of the local Chamber, was pleased with the turnout. Only eight boats entered a year ago.

“With the 23 boats we met our prize money, and with the sponsors we didn’t go in the red,” said Cohoon, owner of Dolls and More. I’m sure we’ll probably do it again. I heard a lot of nice comments.”

Coolers were checked before the fishermen departed, and were sealed when the boats returned to harbor. Weigh-in took place at Haserot Park in Northport, beginning at 6 p.m.

Taking second-place and earning $1,000 was Stewart Christianson of Blue Runner, who fished out of Leland and caught a 17.4-pound salmon. Robert Zywicki of Salmon Fever, who also fished out of Leland, earned $500 for third place with a 16.6-pound catch.

Bryan Doriot of One Mo Time, who was fourth with a 16.4-pound salmon, won a Stihl leaf blower donated by Rick Bryan. The next three spots were won by Jack Deering, Rick Herman and Ken Berg, and each won gift certificates from Fishlander.
