A Leland Township man who was arrested with another man in a drug raid earlier this month pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of attempted assaulting and resisting a police officer in the 86th District Court on Friday.
Jorge L. Roman, 41, of 990 S. French Rd., P.O. Box 200, Lake Leelanau, pleaded guilty before Judge James McCormick on the reduced charge. McCormick was filling in for Judge John Foresman, who was attending a conference.
In exchange for pleading guilty, County Prosecutor Joseph T. Hubbell dropped the original felony charge of assaulting, resisting, and obstructing a police officer and will not seek the habitual offender status for Roman. He is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. and is free on bond.
Roman was home on the evening of Aug. 7 when officers with the Traverse Narcotics Team executed a search warrant on his French Road home. The primary target of the search was Adan Torres, 30, who was also arrested and charged with two counts of delivery/manufacture of a controlled substance, one for cocaine and one for marijuana, and maintaining a drug house.
Torres appeared in District Court on Friday as well after waiving his preliminary hearing. He was bound over to 13th Circuit Court. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in Circuit Court on Monday.
Roman faces a maximum penalty up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Torres, if found guilty on all three charges, faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison and up to $250,000 fines and costs. If convicted of the second charge, the maximum penalties are up to four years and or $20,000, or on the third charge, a misdemeanor, up to two years and or $25,000. If he is found guilty on any of the charges and sentenced to one year or less in prison, the court imposed driver’s license sanctions.
