Armed Forces Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien will celebrate Masses at St. Michael and St. Gertrude parishes Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1 and 2.
He will be a house guest at Northport Point for several days over Labor Day weekend, and has accepted the invitation of the Rev. James Doherty, pastor of St. Michael’s, to celebrate Masses at the two churches at the Catholic churches in Suttons Bay and Northport.
O’Brien, a veteran chaplain of the Vietnam War who serves the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force and Veterans Administration, has traveled the world for the last 10 years visiting troops overseas, especially at Christmas time. He spends at least half of the year traveling to military installations, administering the sacrament of confirmation and ministering to armed forces and their families as well as at more than 70 VA facilities across the country.
His homily will encompass the theme, “Our God and Our Military.”
O’Brien will be available following the 5 p.m. Mass and 11 a.m. Mass at a parish reception, where he will continue to address his topic and take questions.
