A four-year effort to dramatically increase tart cherry consumption has been terminated by the Suttons Bay Rotary Club due to “several unexpected factors” beyond the group’s control.

Suttons Bay Village residents were being asked to limit the number of times they flush their toilets in hopes that sewage treatment lagoons won’t overflow.

A long international ordeal ended last week when a Suttons Bay High School student returned from his native Albania, nearly eight months after he was expected to return from a holiday visit to his homeland.

An Oct. 28 special election is set in Bingham and Suttons Bay townships on a 5-year, 1.2-mill property tax proposal to pay for the fire/rescue department’s new 24-hour “advance life support” service.

What has long been considered the “oldest house” in Leland is the subject of a lawsuit filed in Circuit Court last week, the second now scheduled to be operational next year.

A last-minute request by the Leland Board of Education to reopen talks toward merging with the Northport school district has been denied. The Northport School Board Tuesday accepted a $585,000 bond proposal for a building expansion project.

The third Polish Festival planned for Sunday is expected to be a repeat of a year ago when 12,000 visitors jammed the 300-resident town of Cedar.

A Couturier family dream will come true on Labor Day and those who suffer from polio will benefit when the nine sons of Mr. and Mrs. Uly Couturier, who now all play in the Leelanau County Baseball League, will form a family team to play a Grawn team, probably at the Traverse City fairgrounds. The nine sons are Walter, Bill, Leroy, Ralph, Bob, Lawrence, Bernie, Paul and Joe.

A dozen Glen Lake property owners met Friday night at the home of Harry Weese near the Narrows, forming the nucleus of an organization intended to make sure that Glen Lake is kept at a water level prescribed by court order.

Miss Ruth Belanger of Lake Leelanau, national cherry queen, was in Washington, D.C., yesterday and delivered a cherry pie to the White House to be taken to President Truman.

J.G. Holliday will give entertainment in the Town Hall on Saturday evening the 26th, with the wonderful Cineograph or moving picture machine with Stereopitcon combined. Shows pictures that move as in life, just as seen in all the principle city of the country for some months.
