Annual lecture series to host peace activist


Internationally known peace activist David Cortright will be the guest speaker at the third annual Bill Belko Peace Lecture Series at Trinity Church UCC in Northport next month.

Cortright is a research fellow at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He is also president of the Fourth Freedom Forum based in Goshen, Ind. He has authored or coauthored 15 books on fighting terrorism and promoting peace, including his latest, Uniting Against Terror: Cooperative Nonmilitary Responses to the Global Terrorist Threat, which will be published this fall.

Cortright served as a soldier in the Army during the Vietnam War. According to information provided by Trinity Church, based on his experience in combat Cortright has since worked to promote peaceful, non-violent ways to resolve conflicts. He was the 2004 recipient of the Gandhi Peace Award given by Promoting Enduring Peace.

Cortright has doctorate degree in political science from The Union Institute in Washington D.C. and a Master’s degree from New York University. He will deliver his lectures on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 9 at 10:30 a.m. as part of services at Trinity Church. The lectures are free and will be followed by an opportunity for questions.
