Harvest Tour will aid TART

A major fundraiser for Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails, Inc., will be held Sunday.

The Cherry Capital Cycling Club will host its annual Leelanau Harvest Tour, a non-competitive bicycle tour through Leelanau County.

The event will begin and end at Glen Lake Community Schools in Maple City. Participants will choose from four different rides, varying in length from 25 to 100 miles through rolling terrain, farmland and hardwood forests.

The Leelanau Harvest Tour is known for its unique food stops every 20 to 30 miles. Each stop is on a lakefront park with a menu that includes specialties from local merchants and restaurants.

For a fee, a pre-ride breakfast will be available at the school between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m.
More than 900 bicyclists participated in the event last year and more than 1,000 are expected this year.

The Leelanau Harvest Tour is just one of a number of high profile special events in Leelanau County this weekend and next.

A major professional bicycle race, the Tour de Leelanau, will be held Saturday (See story on Page One of Section One). Also on Saturday, the Leland Heritage Celebration “Wood Boats on the Wall” event will be held in Leland. The following weekend, Sept. 22-23, the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association will host its annual “Harvest Stompede,” a running and walking event.
