Conservancy sets three outdoor activities

Three outdoor activities are planned by the Leelanau Conservancy this month.

Docent David Harris will lead an end-of-summer stroll at 1 p.m. Saturday around the Chippewa Run Natural Area in Empire, where there was a significant amount of focus on improving the area this spring and summer.

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, Leelanau’s own mushroom expert, Ed Reinert, will lead an informative hike at the Kehl Lake Natural Area north of Northport. The forest floor should be full of different species of mushrooms brought on by late-summer rains. The walk is at 1 p.m.

The Whaleback Natural Area will be the site of “Nature’s Paintbox,” a 2-hour event on Friday, Sept. 20. Participants are asked to bring colored pencils, crayons, or pastels and paper or camera to capture nature. Bobbie Poor will lead the rigorous hike, from 10 a.m. to noon, to the top of the Whaleback.

Registration is required for all three events and may be completed by calling 256-9665.
