A Maple City man convicted of criminal sexual conduct 22 years ago is facing a similar charge in 86th District Court.
William M. Kasben, 41, of 1200 Bloswick Rd., Maple City, was arraigned before District Court Chief Judge Michael J. Haley Friday on a charge of second degree criminal sexual conduct. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. He is currently lodged in the County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond.
According to court documents, Kasben was involved a relationship with a downstate woman and had on different occasions transported the woman’s children to the Maple City area. In July during one of the trips, Kasben allegedly committed a criminal sexual act on one of the children.
Kasben was convicted of criminal sexual conduct first degree on Sept. 26, 1985 in the 13th Circuit Court in Traverse City. Kasben was also previously convicted of two check-writing charges on July 8, 2005, in the 13th Circuit Court in Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties.
Assistant county Prosecutor Doug Donaldson is also seeking second offense notice on the first charge. If the second offense notice is included, and the habitual offender clause is invoked, Kasben faces a minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum of up to life in prison. If found guilty on the criminal sexual conduct charge, he faces a maximum penalty of up to 15 years in prison and lifetime electronic monitoring.
William M. Kasben is not the same man who was convicted of animal abandonment/cruelty in 86th District Court in January 2002. That was his father, William J. Kasben.
