Suttons Bay used consistent performances from its top seven runners to place third out of 15 boys' teams at the Greater Northwest Conference cross country meet in Kingsley Tuesday.
Benzie Central won the meet with 26 points, and was followed by Kingsley (97) and Suttons Bay (120). The same three teams also finished 1-2-3 in the 7-team Northwest Conference meet, which was held concurrently. Glen Lake’s boys finished fifth in the Northwest and 11th in the Greater Northwest. St. Mary finished 12th in the Greater Northwest.
In the girls’ race, which had 104 competitors, Pine River (30 points) outran Benzie (40) and Kingsley (95) to win the Greater Northwest. Pine River also won the Northwest race. Glen Lake was third in the Northwest, while the Lakers were sixth in the Greater Northwest and Suttons Bay 10th. St. Mary was 12th.
Pine River’s Alex Vanias, in what Suttons Bay coach Mark Smith called a “dominating” performance, won the boys’ race in 16:52. Suttons Bay’s also ran a strong race with a second-place time of 17:45. Contributing to the Suttons Bay’ third-place finish were Mark Jasinski (19th in 19:41), Tom Pritz (31st in 20:35), Chase Palmer (32nd in 20:36), Sawyer Lawler (36th in 20:49), Juan Reyes (39th in 21:03), and Travis Smith (52nd in 21:54).
“Our guys ran well and we were happy to finish third,” said Smith. “It was just a solid effort across the board.”
Two Glen Lake boys posted top-20 finishes to lead the Lakers. John Lee was 11th in 18:51 and Mike Keim 20th in 19:54, and they were supported by Tony Weinke (58th in 22:27) and Brian Hoedeman (79th with a lifetime best of 30:52).
For St. Mary, Aaron Helwig finished 57th in 22:14. The other three members of the boys’ team for St. Mary included Kienan Sutton (59th in 23:35), Layton Korson (61st in 23:46), and Kyle Helwig (66th in 23:54).
In the girls’ race, Glen Lake’s Amber Therrien paced county runners with a seventh-place time of 21:15. Nadine Gilmer (13th in 22:10) and MacKenzie Roman (43rd in 25:54) were the next two Laker finishers, while Alicia Glazier (52nd in 27:31) and Kaylee Smith (60th in 28:29) turned in personal best runs.
Elizabeth Adams was the top Norse runner with a 29th-place time of 24:03. Cassandra Buffum was 44th in 26:06 and Rachael Farrell was 47th in 26:52.
Allison Korson led Eagle runners with a 23rd-place time of 23:05. Also posting top-50 finishes were Alyssa Korson (24th in 23:32), Kayla Kermode (31st in 24:18), Laura Keller 939th in 25:19), and Susan Herman (45th in 26:13).
St. Mary and Suttons Bay run again Saturday at the Ludington Invitational.
