NPS seeks Port Oneida input

The National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is seeking public input on an environmental assessment of the Port Oneida Rural Historic District and will host an open house on Wednesday Oct. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m.

The environmental assessment describes and analyzes alternative locations for a visitor contact station and employee housing for the Point Oneida area. The assessment considers alternative means of improving visitor access and interpretation of Port Oneida resources.

According to a news release from the National Park Service, all of the alternatives include plans to rehabilitate and stabilize historic structures and stabilize the “cultural landscape” at Port Oneida.

The assessment can be reviewed on the park’s website at www.nps.gov/slbe. Paper copies are available for review at the lakeshore Visitor Center in Empire as well as at area libraries.

Comments may be mailed to the Superintendent, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, 9922 Front St., Empire, MI 49630, or sent electronically through a link on the lakeshore’s website.
Park service officials are hoping to receive comments on the environmental assessment by Oct. 19.

In addition, the park service will host an open house on Oct. 3. The event will include a 5 p.m. presentation on the environmental assessment by a contracting firm from Ann Arbor.

For more information, call the lakeshore headquarters at 326-5134.
