The Suttons Bay Great Books Group will resume meeting on Oct. 8.
The group is an outgrowth of the University of Chicago’s Great Books , an idea promoted to ensure a general liberal education.
The Suttons Bay group began with Introduction to Great Books, followed by Reading and Discussion Series and the 50th Anniversary Series. Each of the softcover books contains collections of classics (short works or sections thereof), which can be read during the two-week to one-month interval of meetings. The Great Books Foundation, which sponsors the publications, also offers How to Lead a Discussion and How to Read a Book.
Currently, the group is immersed in Great Conversations, I, the latest offering from the foundation. Beginning in the 2008-09 year, the group will begin Great Conversations, 2. Several selections are contemporary works.
The Great Books group meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from October through April, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., at the Suttons Bay library. Exceptions are November and December (once) and March (no meetings). All readers are welcome to join.
