When Road Commission workers went to pick up paychecks last Thursday, they found a note posted on timeclocks in Suttons Bay and Maple City garages that announced $1.40 per hour pay raises recently granted were being taken back due to a “possible” labor law violation.

Talks on a “regional jail” to serve Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties are quickly gaining momentum. The two counties have proposed asking a national jail consulting agency to review correctional facilities of the two counties and make recommendations for a joint jail project.
A year-long rift between county commissioners and the County drain commissioner over salary and job duties remains unresolved heading into the 1998 budget year. County commissioners are planning a 21⁄2 percent pay increase for the present $3,576 salary for the position in 1998, the same increase given most county employees.

A potential state purchase of North Fox Island is months away— if ever. DNR Director K.L. Cool Sept. 4 rejected a proposal by David V. Johnson of Southfield to trade all of North Fox Island for state-owned portions of South Fox Island.

SEPTEMBER 18, 1952

Karl Detzer of Leland, after conferring Monday with Army engineers in Washington, D.C. stated via air mail letter to this newspaper that the chief of engineers has ordered the question of repairs for Leland harbor reopened for immediate study.
Workmen at the Rogers Boat Yard, Inc., at Northport have finished framing the first of three captain’s gigs under construction for the Navy, and expect to begin soon on another craft.

Major John Pemberton has been named as commanding officer of the Empire Air Force Base. He succeeds Col. Andrew Schindler, commanding officer since the base was activated two years ago, who is now awaiting transfer.

SEPTEMBER 15, 1892

Elwood Stanley of Maple City has rented his farm and moved to town. Mor. Aylesworth of Milan is visiting his daughter Mrs. M.A. Densmore. A.E. Densmore has commenced his labors as professor of the Northport schools.

The steamer Lawrence called here Saturday evening and took on 600,000 shingles for Milwaukee. The new Norwegian Lutheran Church at Northport will be dedicated Sunday, Sept. 25.
