2nd man charged in break-in

A second man has been charged for his alleged role in a vehicle break-in during the summer at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Patrick B. Sprouse, 17, of 5341 Puffer Rd. SW, South Boardman, was arraigned before 86th District Court Judge Thomas J. Phillips Friday on a charge of breaking and entering a vehicle causing damage to the vehicle. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday at 11:15 a.m. His bond was continued.

Meanwhile, a Fife Lake man pleaded guilty in 13th Circuit Court Monday to two counts of breaking and entering a vehicle causing damage, and habitual offender second offense on Monday.

Brian L. Janssen, 42, c/o Antrim County Jail, pleaded guilty to the two counts under a plea bargain arrangement. In exchange, county Prosecutor Joseph T. Hubbell agreed to drop two similar charges and reduce the habitual offender clause from fourth offense to second offense.

Thirteenth Circuit Court Judge Philip E. Rodgers Jr. accepted the plea. Janssen is currently lodged in the Antrim County Jail, where he faces similar charges in Antrim and Grand Traverse counties. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 8 in Antrim County.

Janssen admitted to breaking into two vehicles in the Lakeshore in June, according to Circuit Court documents. He had been charged with breaking into four different vehicles on different days during the month.

Janssen faces a maximum penalty of up to 15 years in prison and or up to a $10,000 fine for pleading guilty to the two charges as well as habitual offender second offense.

According to District Court documents, Sprouse admitted to having been with Janssen on June 7 when the two men allegedly broke into a vehicle parked in the parking lot at the North Bar Lake area and removed wallets, keys and clothing items. The two men allegedly broke one of the vehicle’s windows to get inside it, resulting in damage to the vehicle.

If Sprouse is found guilty of the felony charge he faces a maximum penalty of up to five years in jail and could pay up to $10,000 in fines.
