Changing water levels to examined

Dynamic changes in Great Lakes water levels will be the topic of the next Inland Seas Seminar on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Roger Gauthier of the Great Lakes Commission will give a presentation on “Great Lakes Levels and Flows” at the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay at 7 p.m. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Since 2000, water levels on the upper Great Lakes have been very low compared with their long-term averages. This year, Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron are at or near their historical record lows.

Gauthier’s talk will address the factors that influence Great Lakes levels, including precipitation and evaporation, global climate change, and erosion of outlet channels.

Gauthier is a program manager at the Great Lakes Commission in Ann Arbor and interim director of the Great Lakes observing system.

For more information about his upcoming talk, contact the Inland Seas Education Center at 271-3077.
