District draw: S-B vs Leland

"I love it," said Leland soccer coach Ryan DeFour after learning of the District draw.

The Comets will meet Suttons Bay in the opening round of the District in a matchup sure to draw a crowd under the lights at the Norsemen field.

“The best soccer we’ve played all year has been against Suttons Bay. I like coaching against (Suttons Bay coach) Randy (U’Ren),” said DeFour.

Indeed, the first two games between Leland and Suttons Bay were like sudden death chess matches, ending in dramatic fashions.

Leland and Suttons Bay, which share the top spot in the Northwest Conference with 4-2 records, have split in two overtime matches this season.

“Now the first round of the District is a rubber match,” said U’Ren.

Glen Lake will take on Traverse City Christian in the District opener at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, followed by the Suttons Bay-Leland contest at 7 p.m. Northport and Leelanau School drew byes.

The Glen Lake/Christian winner will play Leelanau School at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, followed by either Suttons Bay or Leland versus Northport at 7 p.m.

The District final is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20.

Suttons Bay will host all District matches. The Norsemen will also host Regional play.
