Association seeking donations is legitimate, says sheriff

That mass mailing asking for donations on behalf of "M. Oltersdorf" is legitimate, according to Leelanau County sheriff Michael Oltersdorf.

The group, which has been “serving Michigan sheriffs for 130 years,” according to its flyer, is called the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association. It’s based in Grand Rapids.

Oltersdorf said the organization doesn’t donate directly to the sheriff’s budget, but instead mostly offers training for local groups and programs. In particular, he is happy with the sheriffs’ association’s help in training and supporting the county Victim’s Response Team. Members volunteer to help victims of crime and accidents — and their families. The group has been especially helpful after drownings.

The sheriffs’ association helped Leelanau begin a program that works with families to place a sticker on cars allowing deputies to call parents of teens who have been pulled over and questioned.

“Many grants have been given to us” by the organization, Oltersdorf said.

The group also sponsors two training conventions. Oltersdorf was preparing to attend one when called.

The flyer seeks membership at five different levels, ranging from “associate” at $25 to “honorary sheriff” for $500.
