TSO director moving west

Andrew Buelow, executive director of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra (TSO) since 2001, is leaving his post for a similar position in Tacoma, Wash.

Buelow has been appointed executive director of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra and will assume his new duties in November, but will continue in a consulting role with the TSO until a successor is named, board president Robert Gingras said.

Under Buelow’s leadership, the TSO’s number of subscribers has doubled and individual contributions increased by 140 percent. In addition, investments in the TSO’s endowment have grown from $20,000 to more than $800,000.

“I know the future of the TSO is very positive, and I’m grateful for the time I have been privileged to work here,” Buelow said, adding it has “been one of the greatest experiences of my professional career.”

The TSO has more than 60 core contracted musicians and the 185-member Traverse Symphony Orchestra Associates, many of whom live in Leelanau County.
