Five county tennis players from two teams are seeded in the regional tennis tournament scheduled for today in Traverse City.
Leelanau School’s No. 1 doubles team of Justin Lenoch and Zach Stanz have a fourth seed. Pat Morgan at No. 4 singles is also seeded for the Thunderbirds. Glen Lake’s No. 1 doubles duo of Mike McNeil and Matt Keim have a third seed.
Leelanau downed Glen Lake Thursday 6-2. At No. 1 singles Iskandar Sutherland topped Dan Sterling 6-1, 6-4. Jessie Allen defeated Laker Alexis Turner, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 singles Pat Morgan beat Glen Lake’s Caleb Abbott, 7-6, 6-0.
Wyatt Smith, at No. 2, was the only singles winner for Glen Lake. He defeated Dylan Chong in three sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.
Leelanau took two of three doubles’ contest played. Turner Elmore and Alex Finkle downed Glen Lake’s Jordan Fink and Sean Griffard, 6-1, 6-3. And Duncan Breakstone and Avery Lipman topped Megan Thurkettle and Simon Kohler, 7-6, 6-0.
Keim and McNeil went three sets before topping Lenoch and Stanz, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.
The Thunderbirds fell to T-C Central’s junior varsity. Their only winning competitors were Lenoch and Stanz at No. 1 doubles, coach Tim Sutherland said.
Leland wrapped up its regular season by playing Glen Lake twice within the same week.
The Lakers took Monday’s match from the Comets 6-1. Five days earlier, Oct. 3, it was a closer contest with Glen Lake edging Leland 4-3.
On Monday, Sterling topped Leland’s Art Wolin, 6-0, 6-3. At No. 2 singles it was Keim over Comet Matt Osiecki, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 3, Comet Dylan Schaub defeated Glen Lake’s Fink, 6-4, 7-5. Neither team fielded players at No. 4 singles.
McNeil and Alexis Turner beat Ajax Price and Jay Vana at No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-2. Glen Lake was also success in other doubles flights. Abbott and Smith topped Max Lambert and Derek Schaub, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 while Kohler and Griffard upended Phil Matro and Peter Rennie, 6-4, 6-4.
The previous week, Sterling and Wolin went three sets before Sterling prevailed in a 10-4 tie breaker. Also in the winner’s column for the Lakers was Wyatt Smith over Chuck Master, 6-0, 6-3.
Abbott fell to Dylan Schaub at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0 and Turner was blanked by Osiecki, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Glen Lake took two of the three matches played. McNeil and Keim topped Price and Vana, 6-0, 6-0. And Griffard and Fink downed Lambert and Derek Schaub, 6-3, 6-0.
Leland’s winners at No. 3 doubles were Matro and Rennie who edged Thurkettle and Rhiannon Roberts in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.
