
Zachary Hawkins, 16, Glen Lake junior, oldest child of Chuck and Cherie Hawkins of Lake Ann. Zach enjoys soccer and mathematics, the latter of which earned him this recognition.
“Zach is always willing to help tutor his peers, even those with intense math-phobia,” secondary Principal Kevin Kelly said. “He has a calming way of working with students on math with proven results.
“For all that he’s done in this area, and for his overall excellence in academics, we feel Zachary Hawkins is a deserving recipient of this recognition,” Kelly said.
Favorite Class: “Math, it comes naturally to me.” Zach tested out of 7th grade math and has always been one year ahead of his classmates in this area of study. As a sophomore he took Core IV and pre-calculus. He is studying Advanced Placement Calculus this year.
Do you have a role model?: “I’d have to say yes, my parents. They’ve taught me how to go about life and make good choices. Each of them have their own aspect. Dad is a little more laid back and will let things come to him. Mom is a little more ‘go get it’.”
Career Plans: “Probably some type of engineering … something involving math which makes a lot of money.”
Favorite place to hangout: “Our house on the Manistee River. It has a Foosball and pingpong tables and I can go fly-fishing too.”
Describe your perfect day — Who would you spend it with, what would you do, where would you be? “I would spend it with friends and family at my aunt’s house in Grand Blanc playing a competitive game of some kind.”
What’s the best book you’ve ever read? Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
What’s you favorite musician/musical group? Nickelback, the 4-man post-grundge contemporary band from Alberta, Canada.
