Tennis duo win Regional title

Leelanau County teams made some noise in the Division IV tennis tournament held last week in Traverse City, highlighted by Leelanau School winning the No. 2 doubles championship and Glen Lake reaching the finals at No. 1 doubles.

Leelanau School, coached by Tim Sutherland of Glen Arbor, wrapped up a successful season by scoring 11 points and finishing in fifth place in the 10-team Regional Oct. 11. Leelanau was led by its No. 2 doubles team of Turner Elmore and Alex Fenkel, who walked off with the Regional championship by defeating a duo from Harbor Springs in the finals, 6-2, 6-2.

Although Elmore and Fenkel were unseeded, they stormed through fourth seeded Charlevoix, 6-3, 6-1, and top-seeded Traverse City St. Francis, 6-4, 6-3, on their way to the championship.

“Turner was dominant at the net and Alex did not miss from the backcourt,” Sutherland said. “They played almost perfect tennis.”

Other highlights for Leelanau were semifinal finishes by its No. 1 doubles team of senior co-captains Zach Stanz and Justin Lenoch, and Pat Morgan at No. 4 singles.

Stanz and Lenoch lost a tough 3-set semifinal to Manistee, preventing an all-Leelanau County No. 1 doubles final with Glen Lake’s Mike McNeil and Matt Keim. The Lakers’ doubles team lost a 3-set final to Manistee.

Morgan, seeded fourth at No. 4 singles, had the greatest comeback win in the tournament, a thrilling 3-set victory over Manistee to reach the semis.

Also contributing for Leelanau were Iskander Sutherland, who defeated Leland’s Art Wolin at No. 1 singles. Dylan Chong topped Grayling’s No. 3 competitor, 6-1, 6-1, and Leelanau’s No. 3 doubles team of Avery Lipman and Duncan Breakstone downed Leland’s Peter Rennie and Phil Matro, 6-0, 6-1.

“It was a great season,” Sutherland said.
