'Focused' Wildcats net 7th win of the season

The Northport volleyball team traveled to Baldwin and its seventh match of the season Tuesday night.

The Wildcats beat the Panthers, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16. Coach Kristi Fischer said earning seven wins this season was a positive step for a team that had to deal with its former head coach resigning just two days into the start of practice in August.

“The girls have really stayed focused and concentrated on the positives this season,” she said.

Emily Stowe had 11 kills and 7 aces to lead Northport. Kelly Fischer had 2 kills, 6 aces; Octavia Buss had 7 aces, 7 kills; Kristina Leabo had 10 kills, 2 aces; and Betsy Shiner had 9 aces, 7 kills.

Northport had a rougher time on Thursday at Bellaire. The Eagles won, 25-20, 25-16, 25-11. Coach Fischer said by the third game the lights and scoreboard in the Bellaire gym were flickering as a line of severe thunderstorms moved through the area.

“That was a fun ride home through rain and hail,” she said.

For the night, Buss had 4 kills, 2 aces; Stower had 3 aces, 5 kills; Fischer had 3 aces; Leabo had 9 kills, 3 aces; and Shiner had 3 aces, 6 kills.

The only other matches scheduled over the last week was a three team meet at Suttons Bay, with the Norsemen beating Leland 25-10, 25-22, and Forest Area, 25-2, 25-18.

“This is a good warmup for Districts. Everyone played very well against some good competition,” said Suttons Bay coach Mike Kelly.

Charlotte Stowe had 3 aces, 12 digs, 16 aces to lead the Norse. Crystal Dittrich had 5 aces, 9 digs; Anna Pryor had 2 aces, 45 assists; Fran Belanger had 4 digs; Maggie Walters had 2 blocks, 20 digs; Cheyenne Petoskey had 3 aces, 3 digs, 4 kills; and Lena Knoll had 8 kills.

Leland beat Forest Area, 25-17, 25-22. Erica Breen had 13 kills, 13 digs, 1 block, 1 ace; Sarah Ruszel had 9 kills, 4 digs; 1 block, 1 ace; Molly Harrison had 16 assists, 2 aces; Rhiannon Hildenbrant had 5 kills, 2 digs; Julianna Lisuk had 4 kills, 5 digs, 2 blocks, 1 ace; and Haley Versnyder had 18 digs, 1 ace.

Northport will wrap up the regular season tonight at Buckley. A quad meet originally scheduled at Suttons Bay for Tuesday will be instead be played on Monday with only three teams. Leland and Harbor Springs will be part of the action on Monday at Suttons Bay.
