Volleyball teams eye Districts with high hopes

The Suttons Bay volleyball team set some lofty goals this summer.

Win the Northwest Conference regular season title: Check.Win the league tournament title: Check

Win the District, Regional, and quarterfinals to get to the Class C finals in Battle Creek: Working on it.

Coach Mike Kelly said sweat equity players have put in – during the off-season, at team and individual summer camps, and playing beach volleyball in Suttons Bay and Traverse City – is paying off now that the regular season is winding down.

“The girls are so focused. They have been working since early June with the idea of getting to Battle Creek next month, to get to the finals,” he said.

Their journey, as well as that of Glen Lake’s volleyball team, begins Tuesday at the Class C District playoff being hosted by the Lakers. Glen Lake takes on Charlevoix at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, with the Norsemen playing St. Francis at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the Glen Lake-Charlevoix match will face East Jordan at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, with the Suttons Bay-St. Francis winner competing against Mancelona at 12:30 p.m.

The championship match is 1:30 p.m.

The Norse have an overall record of 46-7-4 and secured their second consecutive outright Northwest Conference title by going undefeated in regular season play, and winning the conference tournament. Now, Kelly said his team is ready to take on all comers in the postseason.

Suttons Bay has played Charlevoix, the team most likely to advance to the District final on the other side of the bracket, six times and won each meeting. “You can never count any team out, but the girls are very ready for the playoffs. They’re focused, practices are going very well, they are ready,” he said.

Glen Lake coach Sue Flowers said her 3-33-4 team has a good first round opponent in Charlevoix. The two teams only faced each other once this season, at the Suttons Bay tournament earlier this month. “We split with them, so the girls should know what to expect next week,” she said.

The Lakers have not played East Jordan so Flowers said she has no idea what to expect from the Red Devils. “But, this time of year you have nothing to loose. I’m telling the girls to put everything you have into each game, each play, as it’s one and done time,” she said.

Leland will host a Class D District on Nov. 3. The Comets, 24-24-8 overall, take on the fledging Grand Traverse Academy at 9 a.m., and if they win will face The Leelanau School at 11 a.m. Northport and Traverse City Christian, two teams that have seen a lot of each other, compete at 10 a.m., with the winner advancing to the District final.

Comets coach Angie Shinos said she does not consider any team a “easy win” in the postseason. “You can’t take any team for granted this time of year,” she said.

For Northport coach Kristi Fischer, the postseason may be an opportunity for the Wildcats to get on a winning track. Northport has won seven matches this season, but hasn’t posted a win against T-C Christian. Fischer is bringing up freshmen twin sisters Maria and Victoria Roman for the postseason run. “Everything is going well and he have as good a chance as anyone to get on hot streak,” she said.

Leelanau School coach Katie Wright was not available for comment prior to this story going to press.
