CROP Walk raises a record $19,029

More than 200 people raised a record-setting amount to fight hunger in the 2007 Leelanau CROP Walk on Sept. 23.

Seventeen groups, including 14 churches and National Honor Society chapters from Leland, Northport and Suttons Bay schools, walked a 3.9-mile course near Omena during the event. In all, 210 individuals walked and submitted contributions of $19,029.50, surpassing both participation and donation goals for the year.

Two youth groups, Northport and Suttons Bay honor societies, raised more than $250 each and will be recognized by the state CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) organization. Also slated for recognition is Pam Fulton, who had more than $1,000 in pledges. Any walker with $150 in pledges was given a recognition pin on the day of the walk.

Committee members are Mary Pat and Gene Fountaine, Clix Heerema, Barbara Graves, Fulton and Marty Johnson, and the Rev. Joe Graybill.

CROP has been serving people affected by crisis and chronic need in more than 80 countries for 60 years. One-quarter of the funds collected locally stay in the community.
