'Fun way to learn music' is planned

The Orff approach to teaching music will be featured at the next meeting of the Grand Traverse Musicale on Thursday, Nov. 8.

Musician, pianist and teacher Liz Bannister will talk on the Orff approach, a way of teaching children about music that engages their mind and body through a mixture of singing, dancing, acting and use of percussion instruments. Lessons are presented with an element of “play” designed to help children learn at their own level of understanding.

“There will be audience participation, and I hope everyone will leave saying, ‘I wish I had been exposed to this when I was a child … what a fun way to learn music,’” Bannister said.

The meeting, which starts at 1 p.m., will be held at the First Congregational Church in Traverse City.
