Request to combine two lots for sewer OK'd

A request to combine two parcels into one for the purpose of connecting to the Northport/ Leelanau Township sewer was approved last week by the Northport Village Council.

Council members voted on Thursday, Nov. 1, to combine a property located at 213 E. Fourth St. with an adjacent parcel. Both properties are owned by Frederick W. Steffens II and Pamela Steffens, who made the request to combine the lots.

The property includes a home and an accessory building that share the same septic and water system. The designation will allow the Steffens to pay for only one connection fee for the property. However, if the couple decides to split the parcel in the future, a connection fee would be charged for the newly created parcel.

In other sewer-related business during the 45-minute meeting, the council discussed progress on construction of the system and hired a additional Public Works employee to assist during the process.

Kenneth Lewis was hired as a part-time Public works employee at a rate of $10 per hour, limited to 10 hours per week.

Trustee Barbara VonVoitlander told fellow council members that construction is “moving along” and that paving will continue as long as the weather holds.

Additionally, trustee Steve Mattson praised the work of village employees stating that they were doing an “excellent job” overseeing construction and working hard to make repairs to the water system as necessary.
