Sam was the youngest entrant.

Decker, who has been named Michigan’s runner of the year several times in the past, completed the 5K course in 19:51. Sara Root, the Lake City cross country coach, was the women’s masters champion in 23:58.

In the men’s race, Wynsma held off Ron Zywicki to win by just four seconds. Wynsma, a sophomore at Suttons Bay who won a high school cross country Regional championship and earned All-State recognition for finishing seventh in the Division 4 state championships in October, was clocked in 16:52 while Zywicki came in at 16:56.

Zywicki, a veteran road racer with many victories under his belt, was the men’s masters winner.

“It was an awesome race between Ron and Ben,” said race director and Glen Lake cross country coach Pete Edwards.

The race was held on Glen Lake’s cross country trail, and was also open to walkers.

At the event, 24 turkeys were given away as prizes that were randomly drawn from the list of participants. In addition, members of the Glen Lake cross country teams dressed up in zany costumes, part of the tradition of the Turkey Trot.

The Turkey Trot is a fundraiser for Glen Lake cross country teams.
