The Leland Township Library is bringing author Bill Jamerson to the county Thursday, Nov. 29.
Jamerson, of Escanaba, will talk about his new book, BIG SHOULDERS, at 10 a.m. in the Leland High School Performing Arts Center. The adult historical novel follows a year in the life of a 17-year-old youth from Hamtramck who enlists in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1937. He joins 200 other young men in a work camp near Raco in the eastern Upper Peninsula.
The CCC was a federal work program created by President Franklin Roosevelt in the heart of the Great Depression. During its 10-year run, from 1933-1942, more than 80 camps in Michigan housed nearly 90,000 young men between the ages of 17 and 21. They planted millions of trees, fought forest fires, and built state parks and county roads.
The camps were credited with revitalizing Michigan’s natural resources and transforming the participants into men by teaching them discipline and work skills.
