The Leelanau Sands Showroom and Trigger Boxing of Traverse City will host the USA Boxing Championships in Peshawbestown on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8.
“Boxers from Detroit, Lansing, Battle Creek, Manistee and Grand Rapids will join fighters from Traverse City and the area to compete in what is considered the toughest amateur boxing tournament in the state,” said Bill Bustance of Trigger Boxing.
Tournament bouts will be four rounds, and winners in each class will be eligible to advance to the national finals in Colorado Springs. Traverse City fighters Jacob Layman and Kurt Berry will be representing Trigger Boxing.
At least 12 other bouts will be held on Friday and Saturday, when local boxers who include Dan Sutherland, Scott Nemode, Dustin Flaska and Dominic Piscopo will face opponents from other boxing clubs in three-round non-tournament bouts.
Tickets are $25 for ringside and table seating, and general admission is $15. Two-day passes are available for $20. Tickets can be purchased at the Sands Showroom box office or by calling Trigger Boxing at 933-7050 or Leelanau Sands Casino at 534-8222.
The bouts begin at 7 p.m. on Dec. 7, and 6 p.m. on Dec. 8.

All-state runner Ben Wynsma, a Suttons Bay sophomore, competed in the Footlocker regional championships at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday. His unofficial time of 17:12 on a hilly course gave him a 23rd-place finish in the freshman/sophomore race, said Norseman cross country coach Mark Smith.
“(Suttons Bay cross country teammates) Tom Pritz and Travis Smith traveled with for support and ran in the junior/senior and freshman/sophomore races, respectively,” said Mark Smith.

Alisha Glass was named first team All-Big Ten as the sophomore setter for Penn State women’s volleyball team this week. The Nittany Lions recently secured their fifth consecutive Big Ten title in women’s volleyball and will host an NCAA Tournament regional starting Friday when Penn State takes on Siena in opening round play.
Glass, a former Leland standout, was named to the Big Ten’s All-Freshman team a year ago. She was also named the Sports Imports/AVCA National and Big Ten Player of the Week on Nov. 19 after leading Penn State to a combine .350 hitting percentage in wins over Wisconsin and Illinois having three players average 4.10 kills per game. Glass has set the Nittany Lions to a conference best .337 hitting percentage, is averaging 12.97 assists per game and had five double-doubles this season. She set a new school record with 14 blocks against Illinois.
