Grant provides lift for 'Dunes Review'

A new grant from a private foundation will cover publication costs of the Dunes Review for the first time, creating new opportunities for the regional literacy journal and its sponsoring organizations.

Launched 10 years ago by the Glen Arbor Art Association to promote the works of area authors, the Dunes Review has relied on the GAAA and several patrons to underwrite publication costs. Editing, production and distribution has been the responsibility of Michigan Writers Inc., according to a partnership agreement formed several years ago. Heather Shaw, a member of the Michigan Writers board of directors, is editor of the journal.

The new grant comes from a foundation that wishes to remain anonymous. It will cover the full cost of publication, allowing proceeds from sales and subscriptions to be retained by Michigan Writers to help cover operating costs. All other aspects of the partnership and editorial control remain the same.

“For more than a decade, readers and writers in this region have benefited from this well-crafted literary magazine,” said Michigan Writers president Aaron Stander. “The funding provided by this grant will make Dunes Review financially secure for the near future, allowing Heather to continue to grow the quality and readership of this unique publication.”

The Dunes Review, published twice a year, features poetry, short fiction, and illustrations selected by Shaw and an editorial board. The journal sponsors poetry contests and holds readings twice a year. It it distributed by subscription and sold at bookstores throughout Michigan.

Further information is available at www.michiganwriters.org.

The next issue will be released in December.
