Despite early snow, people won’t be skiing in Leelanau County anytime soon. In Circuit Court this week, the fate of the ailing Sugar Loaf Resort appeared even more clouded as litigants argued over a sewer system serving the resort and nearby homes. Meanwhile, The Homestead resort does not plan on opening its ski hills until Dec. 20.

On the recommendation of its personnel committee, the Suttons Bay Board of Education decided Monday to hire middle school counselor Sue Rummel to replace Bill Crandell as high school principal.

Glen Lake 5th grade teacher Tami Maurer challenged her students to write persuasive essays from the point-of-view of the turkey — whose life is on the line at this time of the year.

A plan to offer municipal sewer service to Northport Village from the planned redevelopment of the former Timber Shores resort was discussed by the council at its monthly meeting last Thursday.
The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Department responded to 39 “complaints” of car-deer accidents in Solon Township through October — four less than the township’s 43 complaints in all of 1996.

Only 1,300 of Leelanau Township’s 1,863 registered voters are eligible to vote in an upcoming zoning referendum for the “Magic Carpet” property. The remaining residents live within Northport Village, which has its own zoning ordinance.

DECEMBER 1, 1977
The long-term care unit at Leelanau Memorial Hospital has been closed to visitors because of a flu-type illness that struck 34 of the unit’s 60 patients.

Leelanau received an official 171⁄2 inches of snow in November, with most falling during the Thanksgiving holiday.
* * *
The first action in a federal case that may determine the fishing rights of Leelanau County Indians is scheduled for Feb. 27 in Marquette.

NOVEMBER 27, 1952
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Yagle and their eight children, ages 2 to 13, were left homeless Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, by a flash fire that destroyed their five-room wood frame house on Morgan Hill in Elmwood Township.

Six fire departments fought a blaze for several hours before dawn Saturday. The $20,000 fire destroyed the Arthur Sheridan tavern in Glen Arbor. Mr. Sheridan said the fire must have started from wiring in the attic.

J.R. Bourdo was elected president of the Leelanau Memorial Hospital corporation at a meeting of directors Wednesday night at Northport Emergency Hospital.

NOVEMBER 18, 1897
There will be a railroad meeting in the Town Hall in this village on Saturday Nov. 27, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. It is hoped that all those who are interested in a railroad will attend.

Neil Carlson was in this port on Monday last, with his elegant new mail boat Manitou. The steamer Petoskey took on several hundred sacks of potatoes at Watts pier on Sunday last.
