What do Christy Miller, Allison Korson and Brooke Fortner have in common, other than being part of the St. Mary girls' basketball team?

They all came off the bench Friday at Leland to lead the Eagles to a 59-31 win over the Comets. St. Mary is 2-0 on the season, while Leland is 2-1.

Coach Paula Korson said she was down to eight players Friday. “Two girls are in the play at Leland and one of my girls was injured in a car accident, so we were down. Having Christy, Allison and Brooke come off the bench and play as well as they did, that is a tremendous effort on their part,” she said.

The game started close with Leland taking a 11-10 lead after the first quarter. Then, as Comets’ coach Jon Kiessel put it, “things just sort of fell apart.” The Eagles went on a 17-2 run to take a 27-13 lead into half time. St. Mary did not slow down at all in the second have scoring 14 points in the third and 18 points in the fourth to secure the win. Leland scored five and 13 points in comparison.

“Christy Miller was just outstanding against us. St. Mary’s is quick and has a lot of experience,” Kiessel said.

Miller scored 16 points and had 6 steals to lead the Eagles. Alyssa Korson had 15 points, 9 steals; Allison Korson had 10 points; Fortner had 9 points, 11 rebounds; and Sarah Schaub gathered 10 rebounds.

“Having those three girls come off the bench and score 35 points for us is great,” Coach Korson said.

For Leland, Erin Sneed, who was one of the top scorers in the region last year at 19.2 points a game, scored 16 points to lead Leland. She was the only Comet to hit double figures for Leland.

The Northport girls’ basketball team is searching for its first win of the season after losing to the Traverse City Bulldogs, 72-27, on Tuesday and at Alba Thursday, 52-16. Coach Gary Longcore said he is down to five players for varsity and five for the junior varsity.

Against the Bulldogs, freshman Emily Stowe scored 14 points to lead the Wildcats. “The Bulldogs shot very well and I thought we didn’t give them a lot of open looks. In the first half they had nine three-pointers,” he said. Traverse City had three players in double figures.

At Alba on Thursday, Longcore said he knew Alba would be tough. “They ran and passed the ball really well. We had a hard time keeping up,” he said. Stowe netted 6 points for Northport.

Northport will host Bear Lake tonight. St. Mary hosted Elk Rapids last night, will play at Onekama on Saturday and will host T-C Christian on Tuesday.
