Woman pleads guilty in embezzlement case

A Grand Traverse County woman pleaded guilty in 13th Circuit Court to attempted embezzlement over $1,000 from a Solon Township business.

Laura A. McAlpine, 50, 4312 Bridlewood Dr., Traverse City, pleaded guilty under a plea bargain arrangement to attempted embezzlement. In exchange for the guilty plea, county Prosecutor Joseph T. Hubbell agreed to drop the original charge of embezzlement over $20,000. Judge Thomas G. Power accepted the plea offer and scheduled sentencing for Jan. 18.

According to court documents, between 2000 and 2003 McAlpine wrote checks to herself from the Solon Township business, Distinctive Windows and Doors, totaling over $40,000.

McAlpine could face a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and or up to $15,000, or three times the amount of the funds that were taken.
