Woman, 18, is sentenced for using, damaging car

Driving a relative's car into a cherry orchard will cost a Suttons Bay woman a little over $7,000.

Sonia D. Chippewa, 18, of 2068 N. W. Bay Shore Dr., Suttons Bay, was sentenced in 86th District Court Friday on charges of attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle and minor in possession of alcohol.

According to court documents, on Oct. 5 Chippewa took a relative’s 2005 Chevy Malibu without permission and drove it into a Suttons Bay Township cherry orchard, where it was damaged.

As part of the sentence Chippewa must pay $7,003.20 in restitution to pay for repairs to the vehicle. She was also sentenced to serve two days in jail with credit for two days served; perform four days of community service work; $150 fine; $700 costs; $50 state crime victims fund; $85 state judicial fee; $350 Circuit Court-appointed attorney program fee; $7,003.20 additional restitution; not to consume or be in possession of alcohol and illegal drugs; not to enter bars; not to operate a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol; must attend one Alcoholics Anonymous meeting per week with written verification monthly; to attend, cooperate with and complete an outpatient treatment program and follow all recommendations; must submit to discretionary drug screenings; to take and pass daily preliminary breath tests for 90 days after release from jail, then tests become random; one year probation.
