“The holiday celebration is the school’s special present to the community,” said Leelanau SchooThe Leelanau School is hosting an International Dessert Sampler Saturday afternoon, and the community is invited to enjoy the treats at the free event.

“The holiday celebration is the school’s special present to the community,” said Leelanau School humanities teacher Elizabeth Blondia, who with fellow teacher Jen Semanco is working with students in their sophomore and junior classes to create the dessert menu.

The school’s chef, Jim Bristol, and the food service staff will guide the students in the kitchen this week as they prepare their desserts.

Blondia said students will make desserts that first originated from other countries, including fruity English scones, French crepes, black forest cake, rolled baklava, and spicy Mexican hot chocolate. Recipe cards will also be available for the public.

“Each student picked a country that reflected their nationality or family heritage, or maybe was just a country they were interested in learning more about,” Blondia said. “One student remembered that her grandmother, who is from the Netherlands, always made this butter cake every Christmas, so she’s making it, too.”

Students and staff are also decorating the school cafeteria, where the event will be held from 1-4 p.m. The cafeteria is located in the main building behind the bell tower on the school campus at One Old Homestead Road in Glen Arbor.l humanities teacher Elizabeth Blondia, who with fellow teacher Jen Semanco is working with students in their sophomore and junior classes to create the dessert menu.
